This section contains information on what 'cookies' are, the cookies used by acci.org.. how to switch cookies off in your browser, and some useful links for further reading on the subject. If it does not provide the information you were looking for, or you have any further questions about the use of cookies on our website, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. 18.1 What are 'cookies'?

'Cookies' are small text files that are stored by the browser on your computer or a mobile device. Websites are able to read and write these files, allowing them store things like personalization details or user preferences. You can think of cookies as providing a "memory" for the website, enabling it to recognise a user and respond appropriately. Each website can only access cookies stored by that specific web domain, meaning that only the acci.org.uk servers can access the cookies set by the acci.org.uk domain. Most web pages contain elements from multiple web domains. Therefore when you visit acci.org.uk your browser may receive cookies from several sources.

18.2 How does African Caribbean Community Infinitive use cookies?

A visit to a page on acci.org.uk may generate the following types of cookie:

  • Anonymous analytics cookies
  • Flash Cookies
  • Registration cookies
18.3 Anonymous analytics cookies

Every time a user visits our website, web analytics software provided by a third party generates an anonymous analytics cookie. These cookies can tell us whether or not you have visited the site before. Your browser will tell us if you have these cookies, and if you don't, we generate new ones. This allows us to track how many individual unique users we have, and how often they visit the site. These cookies cannot be used to identify individuals; they are used for statistical purposes only. This information enables us to improve our website, for example, to assess the impact of and develop campaigns and services.

18.4 Flash Cookies

The African Caribbean Community Initiative uses the Adobe Flash Player to deliver its Interactive Health Check. To improve user experience, Local Shared Objects - or Flash Cookies as they are commonly known - are employed to remember your results once you have completed the health check. Flash Cookies are stored on a user's device much the same as cookies are, however it is not possible to manage them at browser level in the same way.

18.5 Registration cookies

When you register with African Caribbean Community Initiative, we generate cookies that represent whether you are signed in or not. Our servers use these cookies to work out which account you are signed in with, and if you are allowed access to a particular service. If you have not selected 'keep me signed in,' your cookies get deleted when you either close your browser or shut down your computer.

18.6 How do I turn cookies off?

All modern browsers allow you to change your cookie settings. These settings will typically be found in the 'options' or 'preferences' menu of your browser. In order to understand these settings, the following links may be helpful; otherwise you should use the 'Help' option in your browser for more details.

We do not recommend turning cookies off when visiting African Caribbean Community Initiative, as this will prevent you from registering, signing in, and using many of the services on the site. However, if you are concerned about the use of cookies, then the information below will help you control their use during your browsing time.

If you are primarily concerned about third party cookies generated by advertisers, you can turn these off by going to the third party's website and getting them to generate a one-time "no thanks" cookie, which will stop any further cookies being served to your machine. Here are links to one of the third party advertising platforms, each of which provide instructions on how to do this:

  • Google analytics
  • The Adobe website provides comprehensive information on how to delete or disable Flash cookies either for a specific domain like kidneyresearch.org or for all websites - see http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/security for details. Please be aware that restricting the use of Flash Cookies may affect the features available to you for Flash based applications.
